7th & 8th  GRADE READING

MRS. STEVENSON (C-3) & MS. LAHR (C-2)

COURSE SYLLABUS

WELCOME: We are very excited to be back in the classroom, and hope to make this a fun year learning all the ins and outs of reading. Our wish is that every student that passes through the classroom door feels he or she walked into a world of respect, structure, learning, and collaboration. The parent and teacher team are a crucial part of a student's learning and we look forward to working with you. Please feel free to contact me via email at sheri.stevenson@guthrieps.net or you may call the school and leave a message and I will get back with you within 24 hours.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class will target students' growth in the areas of vocabulary, reading, reflection, reading strategies, critical thinking skills, collaboration, and analysis of literature and informational texts from varied literary periods. The overall goal of this class is to increase the literacy and love of reading for all students.

CLASSROOM LIBRARY: Reading is one of the most important skills your child will develop during their school years. In this class, your child will read, read, and read some more. We will do this collaboratively, independently, and as a class. Some reading will be required, but your child will also have the opportunity to choose his/her own book from the classroom library or the school library for independent reading. We try to have a variety of genres available for all students.

DISCIPLINE: We will follow the Student Discipline Policy in the Handbook; however,  whenever disruptions in the classroom occur they WILL NOT be tolerated.

In order for a student to learn and be successful, structure in the classroom is a must. If you need to get out of your seat, raise your hand and wait. If you want to speak, raise your hand and wait. When we are in group discussion, it is imperative that you stay on topic and be respectful of all group members.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE STEPS:

First step: Warning and/or redirection

Second step: You will call home and discuss infraction with parent

Third Step: 15-minute lunch detention

Whenever a severe infraction disrupts the learning of other classmates an office referral will occur.

**These steps do not supersede Student Discipline Policy from the handbook.

ONLINE GRADEBOOK: Parents may sign up to view grades online. If you are unsure how to do this, please contact the Technology Department at 405-282-5959.

TURNING IN WORK:  When you turn in your assignment, we will place a stamp on it to indicate that it was turned in on time. LATE WORK will ONLY be accepted if a student has been absent. *See Student Handbook at guthrieps.net for further direction on when you are absent.

IF YOU ARE ABSENT: It is your responsibility to get the work missed on the day you were out. Check the “WHILE YOU WERE OUT” area for all assignments and/or activities that need to be completed. My parents and I have read, and understand the expectations in Mrs. Stevenson and Ms. Lahr’s Reading class. I understand that it is my responsibility as a student to make sure all work is completed and turned in on time in order to recieve credit. My success in reading class depends on how hard I work for it.
